This scene is from a Japanese animated television series called “Knights of Sidonia”. It revolves around a young boy who becomes a “Garde” pilot and must defend his home, a spaceship known as “Sidonia”. It is a great example of “synchresis” as the roar of the mechs in flight is mirrored through the sound which clips and distorts as they move closer to the screen. The presence of sub-sonic frequencies is also a strong display of “narrative cueing”, where the shift in the atmosphere into space for the character on screen is reflected through the shift in dominant frequency ranges. The sound expresses the raw mechanical power and dynamic motion of the machines used on screen and the human processing of quick environmental transitions.
