17B – Private Dreams and Public Nightmares

Private Dreams and Public Nightmares is an early piece of radiophonic sound work aired on the BBC Third Programme in 1957. It was created by Daphne Oram and Frederick Bradnum, and produced by Donald McWhinnie. Upon first listen, It is striking how well this piece holds up despite the limited toolset available at the time. The use of acousmatic sounds to immerse the listener in the abstract psychological and borderline spiritual narrative in the script feels precise and powerful. To wield radio in this manner even today would be very radical, and this weaponization of the platform and format of the piece is inspiring. I feel that radio is a slowly dying culture due to changes in technology altering the way information and specifically art is dispersed. In acknowledging that, I would also like to strive for this radical and experimental form to have my radio work still feel relevant. Private Dreams and Public Nightmares is a memorable piece that I am sure I will be continuously referencing throughout this term.
