19A Sonic Narrative

I am beginning to understand the scale and complexity of experimental radio shows. In understanding that something as simple as types of footsteps, or methods of recording and treating recorded voice in relation to narrative environments are disciplines that can take lifetimes to achieve mastery. I now see radio as this immensely detailed theatre that requires so many moving parts that must be unified for a common goal. One element I found particularly interesting in the radiophonic work shown in class is the interplay between sound effects and music. Not only can they be used interchangeably to highlight elements in the narrative, but they can be used in relation to each other and rather fluidly. Certain sound effects such as cave ambiance can be played over a drone in order to fully realize the environment, where the “literal” interpretation of the sound could otherwise feel flat and plastic. I believe that pushing into these more abstract forms of expressing environment is where radio becomes truly interesting and a high-level art form.
